Principal's Message

Welcome to a new school year! We all hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer break. We are proud to share that although we did not met our No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals, Honowai students demonstrated marked improvement on the Hawaii State Assessment scores. The students met AYP goals in all areas except for English Language Learner subgroups in Reading and Math. This significant progress was due to the diligence and committed efforts of our teachers and staff in partnership with students and families. Therefore, we will continue to place emphasis on the Harcourt Storytown Reading and Every Day Mathematics programs to strengthen our students’ abilities and performance.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), which is designed to promote a college going culture by providing organizational and note-taking skills for students will begin its second year at Honowai. It focuses on instilling and building foundational and student success skills which will prepare our students for success in secondary school and beyond. The new Binder Reminders, which have been purchased and distributed to all students, is a primary component of the AVID program. These Binder Reminders are mandatory and will assist with organization and also serve as a communication link between the classroom and home.

We all look forward to working together with all families as partners in educating our children. We are committed as a school and as professionals to provide educational opportunities which will help our students achieve at higher levels and ultimately prepare them for future success. Thank you for your anticipated support throughout this exciting 2012-13 school year.
