School Policies

General School Information

School Day
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 7:50 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Wednesday: 7:50 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.

Office Hours
Monday to Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Registration Hours
Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Because school attendance is mandatory for Grades 1-6, students are expected to regularly attend school and be prompt.

Please call the school at 686-7100 by 8:30 a.m. If your child/children will be absent and when your child/children will return to school please provide a written note explaining the reason for the absence. Students who are not physically in school for at least half the school day will be marked absent.

Campus Visitation
During school hours, all visitors are asked to check in at the office; parents are not allowed to go to their child/children’s classrooms without proper authorization. The office will issue visitor passes to those cleared to visit.

Health Requirements
Children entering school for the first time in Hawaii must have a TB clearance and a physical examination, including the following immunization: diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, mumps, measles, and rubella. All of these items must be completed before a student may enter school. Parent should ask the examining physician to complete a Form 14.

School Uniform Dress Code Policy
Honowai Elementary will be implementing a mandatory Uniform Dress Code beginning school year 2015-16. The Honowai Elementary School Community Council adopted a Uniform Dress Code Policy during SY 2013-14. Students are required to wear Honowai school uniforms shirts daily. Exceptions to the dress code will be made by Administration. At the discretion of the school administration, optional dress days may be permitted. Approved optional dress days must meet the dress code guidelines. Students exempt from the School Uniform Dress Code Policy are required to be in compliance with the Opt-Out provision of the policy. Guidelines of School Uniform Dress Code
1. School Uniform is a Honowai School shirt
2. No tank tops or tube tops
3. Oversized/baggy/saggy clothing is prohibited
4. No short shorts(shorts/skirts should be no higher than 3 inches from the top of the knee)
5. Undergarments should not be seen
6. No sheer or revealing clothing
7. Exposing midriff, underwear, belly button, chest/breast, or back should not be seen
8. Heelies are not allowed
9. Max height of high heels, platform shoes/slippers are 1 in
10. Pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts must be fitted at the waist
11. No altering of school shirt
12. Clothing, accessories, and markings that portray gangs, drugs, sex, alcohol, profanity, and/or violence are not allowed
13. Wearing covered shoes at all times is recommended
14. Upon request, students must be able to show that they are wearing their school uniform shirt
15. Caps, hats, and dark glasses are prohibited in class

Traffic Safety
Honowai Elementary School’s Junior Police Ofiicers (JPOs) are on daily crosswalk/entrance duty from 7:20 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and from 2:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (1:25 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday). Please follow the direction of our JPOs; they help us to ensure that your child/children arrive to, and leave from school safely. 

Early Dismissal
No student will be dismissed early during school hours without a written or telephone request made by the parent. The parent must sign out the student prior to the student leaving campus. The parent shall remain at the office until the student arrives at the office.

Before and After School supervision of students
Since the school staff is not available before school for adequate supervision, students should not be on campus before 7:30 a.m., unless they are participating in the breakfast program, which starts at 7:05 a.m. The school cannot take responsibility for the safety of the children who arrive early to school. Also since no supervision is available for the late pickup of children, please make prior arrangements to have your child/children picked up as soon as possible after school ends. Your help and cooperation would be much appreciated.

Honowai Elementary A+ (Afterschool) Program
Honowai Elementary School’s A+ Program is run by the Leeward YMCA. All information regarding A+ should be directed to the YMCA at 671-6495, or meet with the site’s A+ coordinator after school at our cafeteria. Application forms are available at our office.

Safe and Drug Free schools policy
Honowai Elementary has been designated a “Safe and Drug-Free School” school. As such, the possession, use and sale of illicit drugs on campus are strictly prohibited. Those who violate this policy will be subject to punishment as provided in federal and state laws and DOE policies.

Parent activities
Parents are expected to assist their child/children with homework assignments, completion of standards-based instructional units, fulfillment of the Super Honowai Reader campaign, etc. Parents are also encouraged to volunteer their time as tutors, field trip chaperones, teaching assistance, etc. For more information or to volunteer, parents should call the office at 686-7100.
